School-Based Health

What is school-based telehealth?

School-based telehealth provides access to high-quality healthcare in the school setting. A nurse practitioner or a pediatrician examines the student with the assistance of the school nurse or a telepresenter.

What is a telepresenter?

A telepresenter is an individual who is trained on the technology to facilitate the exam under the guidance of a provider. The school nurse or another trained individual can serve as the telepresenter during a telemedicine visit.

How does the program work?

  • The school nurse will call the parent/guardian before requesting a telemedicine visit
  • The student will be seen by a nurse practitioner or pediatrician using the telemedicine equipment
  • If a prescription medication is needed, it will be called into a local pharmacy
  • A note will be sent to the student’s primary care provider

Please note that services vary by school to include acute care, chronic disease management, mental health, and group health education.

Does insurance cover the cost of the school-based telehealth program?

Insurance carriers are billed, and copays and deductibles apply. SC Medicaid covers the visits. Other insurance company coverage varies. It is important for patients to consult their insurance plan prior to a visit to ensure coverage for school-based telehealth services.
